How do I connect via SMB to my computer?

Last Updated: Apr 29, 2015 02:31PM CDT
SMB (Simple Message Block) server or Samba is a popular protocol for sharing files between devices over WiFi. It's very similar to the HTTP protocol and uses the URL format "smb://".  With iExplorer Mobile, you can use SMB to connect to the files on your Mac or Windows PC which will add a folder on iExplorer Mobile's home screen so that you can transfer files back and forth.

CONNECTING TO A WINDOWS PC
  1. Open Control Panel and click on System & Security and then System.
  2. Click on Change Settings next to the computer name.
  3. Click on Change...
  4. Take note of the Computer name because the SMB URL will be smb:// followed by that exact name.
  5. Enter a Workgroup name (if it's already set, you can skip to step #8).
  6. Click on OK and then Apply.
  7. Restart your computer.
  8. Open iExplorer Mobile on your iPhone or iPad.
  9. Tap on the 3 horizontal lines in the upper right corner.
  10. Tap on Connect.
  11. If you don't see your PC appear in the AVAILABLE SERVICES list at the bottom, tap on the WiFi option underneath the ADD CLOUD STORAGE section.
  12. Enter "smb://computername" and tap on Done.
  13. Tap on Connect.
  14. In the Login window, enter your PC's Administrator username/password and tap on Login.
  15. You'll see a folder added to your file layout named after your computer name. Just tap on the folder to open it.

CONNECTING TO A MAC
  1. Open System Preferences on your Mac and click on Sharing.
  2. Select File Sharing and check the box next to it (if it's not already checked).
  3. Look to the right of it for the SMB address of your Mac on that network "i.e. smb://10.0.1.17" or below your Computer name for the .local name.
  4. Open iExplorer Mobile on your iPhone or iPad.
  5. Tap on the 3 horizontal lines in the upper right corner.
  6. Tap on Connect.
  7. If you don't see your Mac appear in the AVAILABLE SERVICES list at the bottom, tap on the WiFi option underneath the ADD CLOUD STORAGE section.
  8. Enter the SMB URL you saw in Sharing System Preferences on your Mac and tap on Done. You can either do the IP address URL or the computer name address with dashes for spaces and ending in ".local".
  9. Tap on Connect.
  10. In the Login window, enter your Mac's Administrator username/password and tap on Login.
  11. You'll see a folder added to your file layout named after your SMB URL. Just tap on the folder to open it.

HOW TO TRANSFER FILES BETWEEN YOUR COMPUTER AND DEVICE
